3D scanner firm raises £1.6m

Oxfordshire-based start up Fuel 3D Technologies has secured £1.6million to further develop its low cost, high resolution 3D scanner technology.

The investment follows a successful Kickstarter campaign launched by the company in 2013, which helped it raise more than £200,000. "We had a phenomenal response to Fuel3D on Kickstarter and the attention this generated led to many enquiries from the broader investment community," said ceo Stuart Mead. "We have always been confident that our technology has the potential to revolutionise the industry and are delighted to have found a group of ambitious and well-resourced investors who share our vision." Fuel3D is a handheld 3D scanner that delivers high resolution shape and colour capture for 3D modelling applications like 3D printing, as well as on-screen applications like animation and game development. The device combines pre-calibrated stereo cameras with photometric imaging to capture and process a 3D model in seconds. It is expected to retail at around £900, significantly less than current systems which can cost up to £10,000. Watch the video below to see the technology in action.
