Hytrec mixed fuel hydrogen petrol powered car on show at MENE 2016

On show at Manufacturing & Engineering North East (MENE) will be a demonstration prototype of a Hytrec mixed fuel Hydrogen Petrol powered car. This prototype was developed as part of a European funded project, which aims to reduce tailpipe emissions by combining Hydrogen into the fuel mix.

Research has shown that enhancing a petrol internal combustion engine (ICE) with hydrogen has the potential to improve fuel economy by 20 to 30% requiring little or no exhaust emissions control. There is potential for burning hydrogen in ICE as part of a mixed fuel charge in order to take advantage of lower cost brown hydrogen (as opposed to ultra clean hydrogen) and the advanced nature of the modern petrol ICE.

A low-cost mixed fuel ICE solution was developed by AMAP, part of the University of Sunderland, and installed as a retrofit to a standard spark ignited (SI) petrol ICE production vehicle.

Visitors to MENE will be able to see and learn how the car runs off purely petrol, or a mix of Petrol and Hydrogen, and so avoids problems with range anxiety for running out of Hydrogen. The addition of hydrogen into the fuel mix reduces hydrocarbon and both Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide emissions significantly.
