Shock recording just got even smaller

As electronic devices and similar items of equipment get smaller and more complex they tend to get proportionally more fragile

Problem: . Unfortunately, some of the people dealing with the transportation and handling of these devices, have not got proportionally more delicate and careful in their handling, therefore failures due to mishandling and abuse may increase. One way of preventing these types of failures is to ruggedise the component, although this is not always possible and, in many cases, necessary for the final application of the technology. An alternative is to slap shock indicators all over them so that it is obvious that any rough handling will result in a little window turning red and the lines of blame being drawn. The main problem is that as components and electronic devices get smaller, shock indicators have not experienced a commensurate drop in size – sometimes being bigger that the component. Solution: According to Shockwatch, it has had the answer to this problem for a number of years but never promoted its use on its own. The company's answer is to remove all the 'packaging' from its Shockwatch Label product and just use the small indicator tube on its own. Measuring just 2.4 x 17.5mm the indicator tube can be incorporated into many small components and assemblies with adhesive, tapes or clips with a simple visual examination informing the user as to whether the pre-set shock level has been exceeded. The indicator is available in nine different sensitivities or impact threshold levels and is totally self contained, remaining in working condition for the entire life of the host product. Applications: The company cites successful field testing in its literature and offers a number of applications for this very simple adaptation of a very simple but effective device. These include avionics, medical equipment and instrumentation, electromechanical devices, camcorders, computer hardware, military ordnance and optical devices. The device is available from Scopus UK.
