Glass-bottomed 'Sky Pool' to bridge two London buildings

Eckersley O'Callaghan, the engineering firm behind a number of cutting edge designs from Manchester Town Hall to Apple stores around the world, and Arup Associates have revealed plans to build a swimming pool suspended 35m high in the heart of London.

Nicknamed the 'Sky Pool', it will link two 10-storey luxury apartment blocks at the Embassy Gardens development in Nine Elms, near Battersea power station. The pool will be completely transparent, 25m long, 5m wide and 3m deep, with a water depth of 1.2m and 20cm thick glass.

The pool is described as the first of its kind and is part of a sky deck on the roof of the buildings that will give residents stunning views of London, including the Houses of Parliament and the US embassy.

The idea came from Sean Mulryan, Chairman and ceo of Ballymore Group, who commissioned the Embassy Gardens development with partners Eco World.

"The Sky Pool's transparent structure is the result of significant advancements in technologies over the last decade," said Mr Mulryan. "The experience of the pool will be truly unique; it will feel like floating through the air in central London."

The blocks linked by the pool are part of the second phase of the development, which will eventually see 2,000 new homes being built.
