Angle sensing in extreme environments

Variohm EuroSensor has expanded its range of precision position sensors with the RSX-7900 angle sensor from Novotechnik. The sensor is said to provide IP69K protection, long life and ISO13849 PL-d safety compliance in a robust non-contacting design that is suited for use in mobile construction, agricultural machinery, and other extreme environment applications.

The sensor operates from 9 to 34Vdc and is offered in six standard measuring ranges with unrestricted rotation. Range resolution is 12-bit across a 4 to 20mA output with linearity specified at 2% at up to 90°, whilst repeatability is claimed to be 0.2° and update rate is 5kHz. Single and dual redundant versions are available and the non-contacting NOVOHALL Hall Effect measurement technology, said to give a 100million movement life even under arduous shock and vibration conditions.

The sensor design includes a sealed anodized aluminium housing with a stainless steel shaft for corrosion protection with salt and spray resistance. Axial and radial shaft loading can be up to 300N due to its double row angular contact ball bearing design. The sensor measures 70mm in diameter, has a nominal length of 35mm and is available with a choice of shaft styles for installation flexibility.
