Customisable PICMA® Bending Actuators from PI

PI multilayer bender actuators can be manufactured in large quantities with almost any desired contour and dimension. Even unusual shapes such as trapezoid or shapes with internal holes with a full ceramic insulation, are feasible. The thickness of the active layers is also variable starting from just 15µm.

With thanks to an innovative approach to production techniques, PI multilayer bender actuators can be manufactured in large quantities with almost any desired contour and dimension. Even unusual shapes such as trapezoid or shapes with internal holes with a full ceramic insulation, are feasible. PI’s piezo actuators are protected against humidity and have a high insulation resistance significantly improving their lifetime, compared to common polymer-insulated actuators. The thickness of the active layers is also variable starting from only 15µm, making applications with very low drive voltages (as low as 10v) feasible.

With the production techniques employed at PI’s Lederhose site in Germany, PICMA® benders can also be produced in size to achieve a total travel range of 2mm or made as small as 4mm x 10mm x .65mm. As a result of their flexible size and operating voltage, PICMA® bender actuators are ideal for integration into small mobile battery operated devices, such as hearing aids. In this application the piezo element functions as an acoustic-mechanical transducer.

Customisable solutions are available with relatively short lead-times and PI offers extensive client support from the prototype-phase right through to the integration into a customer’s OEM system.

PI has been developing and manufacturing piezo ceramic materials and components for standard and OEM solutions for over 20 years: piezo components, ultrasonic transducers, actuators and customisable solutions. With awards for reliability, the PICMA® multi-layer actuator technology is an excellent example of the many leading edge technologies that has come from the large investment PI makes each year into its own research and development sites.
